"The Milnes/Vaughan family has contributed so much to our community and have always responded to others," Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove. "We need to help them."

There's veteran U.S. Army veteran Kyle, fellow Fair Lawn Volunteer Rescue Squad member Steve -- who also serves as a Class 1 police officer in town -- and Jackie, a pre-school teacher.

A Go Fund Me campaign was already near its $12,000 goal Sunday evening, less than 24 hours after the 11:30 p.m. fire broke out in the family's Pomona Avenue basement and quickly spread to the first floor.

"We are very thankful that the only thing lost to the flames were things," close friend Amber Kay posted on Facebook. "The entire family (including the dog) made it out safely, but the fire consumed everything."

The blaze was brought under control after about 90 minutes, Police Sgt. Brian Metzler said. But much of the house was destroyed.

"The cause of the fire has been undetermined but is not considered suspicious," Metzler said.
